CURTS - A project for three choreographers.
TND invites the German choreographer Johannes Weiland and the Brazilian Ederson Rodriguez Xavier to create works alongside the presentation of Thomas Noone's new work Glitch. The theme of the evening is "Error".

The Choreographers.

Johannes Wieland is the Artistic Director/Choreographer of the resident dance company at the State Theatre of Kassel. A former principal dancer with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and Berlin’s State Opera, he established his company, johannes wieland, in New York in 2002 and with his duet, shift, won Germany’s 2004 Kurt Jooss Prize as well as Hubbard Street 2 National Choreographic Competition in the same year. In addition to leading his own companies, Wieland was Associate Artistic Director of PARADIGM (New York), and is a guest choreographer and teacher at companies and schools around the world.

Ederson Rodrigues Xavier was born in Brazil where he trained in capoeira, afro jazz, classical and contemporary dance. Based in Amsterdam, he works as a independent choreographer for various European companies as well as performing with other companies such as Leine & Roebana and DudaPavia (puppetry and dance.) and giving workshops and classes.

"I frimly believe in working with external choreographers and Curts for me is the logical extension of the work initiated in the Tort-Chaos project, with Guy Weisman and Roni Haver and continued in our collaboration with Norrdans and the experience with Jo Stromgren. I believe it is essential not only for us as artists to work with other creators but also that the audience sees the dancers of the company interpreting other choreographers’ proposals.

Furthermore in 2010 Curts, provides the perfect antidote to the Room, a project that we have been developing over the last four years. In this project the visiting choreographers, Johannes Weiland and Ederson Xavier Rodrigues have mounted their pieces in two weeks of intense creation, and the resulting pieces have a fresh and immediate feel.

My creation for the evening, Glitch, is also a new collaboration for me as it is the first time I work with the Slovenian composer Borut Krisznik. Borut and I met through the internet (!) but I was at once interested in his highly original music and its immediacy for dance.

When I first considered the evening and was reflecting on the mechanisms that a choreographer may use to cause the audience emotion I began to reflect on failure and coincidence and to what degree we control and inform our work. This gave me the theme for the evening which I then proposed to Johannes, Ederson and Borut such that Curts has become a reflection on Error.”
