Mur

Read: Critic Mur

Dance, Music, Architecture

18th of Januray, 2007, Mercat de les Flors, Barcelona.

Area black vast.
Room for millions wandering and still.
The place is already old.
It is made of dried leaves.
Just wide enough for one. On it no two ever meet

Extract from Beckett’s fourth text in a series of five

Mur takes place in an imaginary open space, delimited by a powerful scenery designed by David Jimenez and original music by Pedro Navarrete. The piece is inspired by a text from Foirades, collaboration between Samuel Beckett and Jasper Johns. The austerity of Beckett’s writing is remarkable. Using unfinished phrases and incomplete, ambiguous descriptions he creates a space both tangible and emotive. This is the aim of Mur. By dividing the stage with a plain barrier and by delimiting and directing the dancer, simple movement provokes an emotional response.

Beginning with the wall front stage, radically limiting the possibilities of movement and creating an anticipation of what can happen, the space is slowly opened, the dance enters the space and the possibilities multiply. The dance has then to take its own decisions and establish its own limits: Perhaps the barrier is not merely physical.
