“The Purity of Thomas Noone”

MARJOLIJN VAN DER MEER

Four years ago with the arrival of Thomas Noone, Dance in Barcelona gained the contribution of an excellent professional. In this time Noone has shown himself to be an incessant worker, using his talent with discretion, alternating between dancing, (with the likes of Ramon Oller and Cesc Gelabert,) and choreographing, winning both the Ricardo Moragas prize in Barcelona and the Certamen de Madrid.

Within our circle of creation, where the “visual” has gained much ground at the expense of choreographic content, Noone is a happy exception: He makes his dancers dance. And he does so with measure, finding the utmost use of the possibilities of his dancers.

In Loner , Noone with three woman and a man, offers us an hour of pure dance with a choreographic complexity surprising for such a new creator.

Besides his rich choreographic language, noteworthy is the beautiful setting, a play of contrasts between the warmth of the baroque music of Purcell and the frigidity of the contemporary electronic soundscapes of Gianfranco Pappalardo

There is an air of simplicity and good craftsmanship in this sensitive reflection on the solitary condition of the individual, a state form which one can not escape despite companions that appear in the course of life.

In Loner there is neither too much nor too little, and it is gratifying to see that with movement and dynamic, it is still possible to create beauty. Bravo!
