Go to: Critic Loner We are alone, we begin alone and are, by choice or circumstance, left alone.
This is the theme of Purcell’s opera Dido and Aneas, where the player’s fate is to be alone: Aneas pulled away from the woman he loves by his belief in duty and destiny; Dido resigned to her fate of dying alone. She is initially unwilling to admit her love but when she acknowledges Aneas, against intuition, she finds that he must leave. He, unwittingly tricked by the sorcerers who guard a deep hatred for Dido, finds that he must voyage to Italy. Based on this mythological story and using the music
of the opera of Henry Purcell, Loner is an observation of a group of
individuals and their relations. Their struggle to be together despite
jealousy, misunderstandings and obligations and their resulting isolation.
